Annoyences

I'm glad I don't pay enough in tuition for janitorial services. Also, I agree with the writer who says "how do you know?" I'm a slob, I am messy at home.

College Life is classy.

While I don't live on my own yet, I know, I mean I 100% know, that this will be my life when I finally do move out. And probably after college too. If the boy lets me.

On a funny note, I did find this in the vending machine room of Mano. It was so tempting to simply pick everything up and dump it in my bag.

I haven't died.. I promise

Hello everyone! I just wanted to apologize for my absence. My life got a little crazy last week. I found out that I had 5 late papers, I was trying to find a place to stay and then pack for Chicago. The only things I did were work, school or trying to figure out things for Chicago. It was ridiculous! I mean, I know I could of posted my super interesting journal claims about the philosophy of art, but I was afraid everyone's head would explode about half way through. But stay tuned though! I have some great reviews I plan on posting (hopefully) tonight. I will try to do better about posting, or at least warning you the next time I take a leave of absence.

Student Organizations/Services Fair!

I was pretty excited to come to school today. I don't usually get to say that. Maybe if my classes ended at 4, but that obviously doesn't happen. Honestly, no one can be excited to go sit at school for almost 12 hours. If someone was, it was probably because they were made in a school lab experiment gone wrong.

Anyways, the Student Organizations/Services Fair. This is pretty much where every major, service, and club at WSU come together to give you free stuff to lure you to their table and talk to you about what they are. If you know me at all in real life, you know that I am the QUEEN of free stuff. I love getting free stuff more than the average person. Heck, I will go out of my way to get something for free (or super cheap.)

Considering this was my first fall semester at WSU, I didn't really know what to expect when it came to the size or amount of free stuff/information I would be receiving. I had been at the one at Central: it was Huge. If I remember correctly, there was four tents? Give or take one. But it was jammed packed full of people and information and food and free stuff. Comparing WSU to CMU, WSU sucks. Like horribly. But then you have to consider that WSU is smaller than CMU and most people don't stay on campus. If we were not a commuter school, I'm sure more people would start and join organizations. I would. I might actually. As long as meetings aren't always on any day other than Mondays or Wednsdays during my break.

I got some really great stuff considering how small it was. I got two cookies for free. They were super yummy. Plus they held me over till after my second class. Which considering that is usually when I start snacking, is awesome. I got a couple of water bottles, notepads, and a ton of little candy. I have a ton of information to read through. I might actually do that during my break, cause I know there is no way I will ever have the time to touch it once I go home.

If you are easily offended about the subject of race, quit reading now. I am going to go on a little rant. Please don't send me hate mail; this is my opinion and I am allowed to believe and express whatever I want. I am not trying to persuade anyone to believe what I say is right, you can think I'm a complete idiot for all I care.

There was one thing that bugged me about the SOSF. All the specific race tables. If you haven't read my bio, I am a middle class white girl. There was no table for me. There were about 10 tables for African American only organizations. About 5 for Arabic American only and a couple other randoms. How come there wasn't a White People are Awesome or White People Come Together club? Why is it racist if white people have a white only club but not if a African American or Arabic American have race only clubs? This bugs the SHIT out of me. We are in the 21st century. I understand that white people have been dicks to any other race throughout time. It is actually one of my favorite subjects to study (not because I support it, but because I get a weird enjoyment of being pissed off about inequality.) But come on. I just hate that people fought for equality for races and yet it is severely one sided. Sorry for not being black or arabic. Sorry I'm white so I can't have my own group join. UGH.
*Again, please don't send me hate mail for my views. These are just my opinions of my 19 year old self. Deal with it.

Anyways, overall I think the SOSF was a success. I got a bunch of stuff, some food, and possibly a new club to join. If your school offers a fair like this one, GO. Do not walk, but RUN to it. Because no college student should ever say no to free stuff. We are poor. We don't get to be prideful. :)

shit my professor says monday night edition

This is my first class of Philosophy of Art. My teacher is an older man, probably in his 60s. So when you read these, keep that in mind.

talking about mobwives - "are you pulling my leg? This can't be a real tv show"

"I haven't owned a tv since I was 16"

"Roseanne. Thats a current tv show right?"

"two girls and one cup dot com is not art"

referring to two girls one cup "was it made with grace and skill?"

"wtf!" *note, to read this one with humor, read it thinking of your grandpa saying it.

"they are building anything! you silly. you country mouse!"

talking about how men used to think women were only good for incubators for men aka babymaking "womens contribute is warm and moist. Just like making yogurt"

"women bleed a lot. What happens when you bleed? You die. WOMEN NEVER DIE. Whats wrong with you?"

Shit my professor says week 2

Guy wearing suit in class. Teacher "him wearing a suit might create an argument that he is really dedicated to class" other student "or maybe he is looking for a date" Teacher "well. this is awkward now."

"Now we are going to watch a debate on religion. Cause that's not controversial."

Secure on Campus

Let me tell you a story. When I was at CMU, I had horrible roommate experiences. In my second room, I "lost" so much stuff - makeup, clothes, money, ect. I would hide things under my pillow, in my pillow, under my mattress, and still it would disappear. I'm guessing I lost about $150 worth of money and stuff if not more. There was no safe in the room, nor were we offered a safe place to keep our stuff. It was just expected that everyone was nice and trustworthy and not going to steal. Uhuh, sure. That worked out well.

I recently came to know of a website called Secure on Campus. It has a ton of stuff to keep students secure on and off campus, as well as their stuff. They have a ton of dorm safes, which would of been perfect for me and my situation. They come in every color, size, durability.

One of my favorite products from Secure on Campus is their laptop safes. I own a Mac. My Macbook put me behind a little over $2000. If I ever lost this thing, I'm pretty sure I would be in jail for murdering the person who took it. Thank God it didn't get stolen. But if I would of stayed their any longer, who says it wouldn't of been? Computers are the number one things stolen at CMU. A laptop safe would of been perfect in my situation.

So what if you are thinking, I don't need a dorm safe? They sell a whole lot more. One thing they sell I think is just awesome. It is a Date Rape Drug Coaster. You just use the coaster and stick in both sides and it tells you if the drug is detected. They also carry a ton of different pepper sprays. So that way is someone is trying to drug you, you can mace them and get the hell out of there.

College should be fun. But sometimes, you have to cover your butt and make sure you and your stuff is safe. Secure on Campus helps you do that.

Disclosure: I was paid to write about the company, but all opinions and thoughts are my own.

Reasons of the day: why WSU is "awesome"

Reason 1:
I was hungry this afternoon. I attempted to eat breakfast which failed, so I was pretty hungry after my first class. Since I have about a 45 minute break in between my first and second class, I decided to go get some food. Plus I kept seeing people with Tim Hortons doughnut boxes with fueled my desire for some Timmy Hos. But when I finally walked there, it WAS FULL. I mean, out the door line. In this tiny little Tim Hortons. I ended up getting out of there with my muffin on time, but still. It took 10 minutes to get a single muffin. STUPID.

Reason 2: On my way to class with my delicious chocolate chip muffin in hand, a beggar asked me for money. ON CAMPUS. Like, right in front of Old Main. With a ton of cops around, not doing a single thing. Honestly, I am a college student. You serious think I have even .50 to give you? CLASSY WSU.

Reason 3: After a super boring art history class, I slowly made my way back here to Mano for my next class. As I was walking, this older man passed me, looked me right in the eye and said (very loudly) "I AM YOUR GOD." Then he kept walking like nothing happened. WTF.

Wayne State: The best and worst of according to College Prower. com

I'll be honest. I'm sitting here in MANO, pretty bored and unable (more like not wanting to) to start readings for my classes. So I googled review products free college. I hate that most product reviewing is aimed towards moms. Just cause I'm not a mom yet doesn't mean I don't know how to test stuff out. And trust me, I'm really good at the testing durability point in the review. My computer can account to this. Anyways, I noticed a website call CollegePrower.com show up. I had no clue what it was, but it sounded interesting. So of course, I clicked it. I entered Wayne State University to the search box and tada stats and reviews of my beloved (lol) college showed up. I found the best and worst parts the most interesting:

Worst Of

Lowest Grades

  • C Guys - This I can attest to. Guys here are kinda creepy.
  • C Parking - If you read my last post you'll understand why I agree
  • C Transportation
  1. 1
Weather has a mind of its own. - This I think is unfair. Its Michigan weather, not WSU weather or Detroit weather. Which means all MI colleges/universities better have this one.
  2. 2
Parking is terrible without a pass. - again, read my last post.
  3. 3
Homeless sometimes gather around the student center when the police are not watching. - This makes me laugh for one reason "when the police are not watching" AKA NEVER.
  4. 4
In the winter, the maintenance crew isn't always up before first classes at 7/8 am and the sidewalks may be snow covered.
  5. 5
    Dorm prices
  6. 6
Off campus housing at reasonable prices - why is this a bad thing? I don't understand
  7. 7
Reputation isn't as high as other schools. - This I don't believe. We have a pretty good rep.
  8. 8
Some departments have instructors that don't speak English very well. - 2 words: MATH PROFESSORS. I stopped going to class after the third week because I only understood about 10th of what my asian prof said.
  9. 9
    Some lab equipment is older.
  10. 10
Changing majors can be difficult if you don't have all of the necessary paperwork.

This is the stuff in the best section:

Best Of

Highest Grades

  • A- Diversity - This makes me laugh. The school is right in the middle of a large African-American populated city, next to a large population of Arabic-Americans and then surrounded by middle class white people. DUH ITS GOING TO BE DIVERSE.
  • B+ Drug Safety
  • B+ Nightlife
  1. 1
Faculty/staff members are amazing and very willing to help students - This I agree with. I haven't had a bad teacher when it comes willingness to help students. Everyone seems to love their job.
  2. 2
    Range of diversity
  3. 3
    Private bathrooms in the dorms
  4. 4
The dining hall actually has good food.
  5. 5
Classes are centrally located. - This I love too. Plus if you are taking mostly major related classes, there is a good chance that they will all be in the same building.
  6. 6
Broad range of majors - while you can't major in underwater basket weaving or Klingon, there is probably a major close.
  7. 7
There is always something to do in Detroit.
  8. 8
Honors students get free passes to museums.
  9. 9
Discounted sporting events tickets - This is true. But it is usually very little off, or like spending $20 more than normal price and get a free hotdog and shuttle!
  10. 10
There are so many opportunities to improve your knowledge and resume! - I feel like this one is a "we don't have ten good things to say so lets bullshit something."

If you are a college student, I recommend checking out your school on here. Its fun to laugh at everything. Plus, a big plus actually, it will allow you to procrastinate about 10 more minutes from doing your required readings.

Fall Semester 2012: First day as a sophomore

College. Oh college. I love college. I really do. But then again, I'm also that huge nerd who loves to read and learn new things everyday. Today I started my sophomore year at Wayne State University. To anyone who doesn't live in southeast Michigan, WSU is in the middle of Detroit. Yep, big bad Detroit (not really that bad.)

Today started off quite well. I woke up still dreaming of my mother owning a circus and me performing with a crazed black bear (think the angry bear from Brave.) But after showering, getting my hair and makeup cute, stressing about money, I realized I was mildly running late. Not like a half hour late, but 5-10 minutes late. Which for me is A LOT. I'm one of those people who get up at a specific time, have specific time slots for what I need done and leave at the same time everyday. I like to sleep as much as possible, which lead me to live this type of blocked lifestyle. And with me, it works. Anyways, at about 845, I realized that I did have money for gas, but I didn't have time to get gas and warm myself up a bagel. So I chose Mcdonalds for lunch. Now, my Mcdonalds is usually pretty fast at getting people through the drive through. Except today. Today I was in the drive through FOREVER. Which meant I didn't even hit the expressway till 905. It takes from 15-20 minutes to get to school. More like 25 when I try to save gas and go 60 the entire way there. Not so much today. I hit 75 and at times went 80. Oops. But I didn't care, I had a class to get to.

So around 925ish, I finally hit campus. I was pretty happy, I had 10 minutes to get to park and get to class. And with the structure I wanted to park in right next to my first building, I thought it would take me about 5 minutes in total. Yeah, I was an idiot to think that. The line to even get into the structure was all the way back to the street and/or about 30 cars long. Once I was only about 10 cars away and already late for class, I was informed by a nice (not nice) lady who told me the structure was full to anyone without a pass. WSU parking passes are crazy expensive. I refuse to buy one. It would cost me more for a single semester of parking then it did for an entire year of parking at CMU. Stupid. So then I tried to get into the parking structure slightly down the road. I thought the nice rent a cop was letting me into the line. No. He let every car into the line and then informed me that "you can't just cut into the line. You have to go straight. You didn't wait in line." I told him I waited 20 minutes in the other line. He told me to try another structure. So what did I do? I just went around the building to the other (and empty) entrance. By this point, I was already about 20-25 minutes late. So trust me when I tell you that I was hustling to class.

Now, I don't want to bore you with all the specifics of all my classes. But so far, they seem pretty good. I've already been to Broadcast News, Ancient Medieval Art History (ok, this one might suck) and News Reporting. I have another 2ish hours till my next class, which is Argument and Debate with arguably one of the cutest professors on campus. But also one of the hardest professors I've had so far. So we will see!!

Cmu football games

So tonight was my first ever official college football game. And it kinda sucked. Niki and I got all cute and arrived at the stadium about a half hour early. We met some friends and headed down to the third row of the student section. We thought we had great seats. But then we found out that being in the student section meant you couldn't sit down. Or stay cool, or not touch someone, or stay clean and not sweaty. It was just not fun. We ended up moving to the grassy area with all the old people and kids to get out of the nastiness. But, at least I can say I went.
